Vintage Cloche hats - the classic "flapper hat" |
Up until the 1920s, women's hats were anchored to hairstyles with combs and hairpins or a combination or netting and structural supports. As hemlines creeped up to the knee, hair styles became shorter until they reached the classic "bob" style. These bobs were too short to hold the larger hats of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Thus the cloche hat was born.
Close fitting, the cloche did not need to be secured with pins or combs. It could rest securely on a woman's head by itself or with one of the newly invented "bobby pins" to keep it from blowing off in a stiff breeze. The carefree flapper could dance down the street and keep her hat in tact.
If you do not have a chance to get to the Art Deco Expo, come by
the store and peruse our vintage cloche hats. They are perfect for that Great Gatsby New Year's Party or your own vintage hat collection. A flapper hat is perfect inspiration for planning your own adventures and goes great with any decor.
